One fashion item never to go out of fashion are ladies tights. Trends change but we will always need tights in some from, whatever material they may be made from. Since the invention of nylon in the 1930's and the rise of "nylons" to widespread popularity amongst women in the 1960's, tights have become an essential everyday item for women everywhere.
Nylon was introduced as a cheaper material than silk with which to make tights but with the advancement of technology there are now many materials available to make affordable tights and stockings. The use of Lycra prevents tights going baggy at the ankles, which was a common problem for ladies in the 1950s; it also adds the stretch that keeps our tights up without wrinkling! We have even gone one step further now and developed whole ranges of shaping tights, which help to shape and tone those extra wobbly bits that we’d all like streamlining.
A common material for winter tights is wool, as it keeps you warm and cosy, and comes in lots of different colors. Wool tights are the ideal way to look stylish but keep warm during the colder months and as they now come in so many different colors the choice is endless.
When the weather gets a little warmer but you still need to keep your legs covered opaque tights are perfect. A long way from the days of sheer nylons, opaque tights have been a must-have for many women for the last few decades. They come in all sorts of colors and many different deniers.
The denier is the measure of thickness of the weave of the material that the tights are made from – whether that is nylon, silk, cotton, wool or whatever - and the higher the denier the thicker the tights. Opaque tights are generally 40 denier or higher, while sheer tights range from 5 to 30 denier, and often have reinforced toes and gussets.
Sheer tights are made from many different materials also, as the denier is decided by the thickness of the weave and not the material they're made from.
Whichever tights you prefer - opaque, sheer, support, colored, wet look, footless, or suspender - there is a vast array of choice available to buy now.
If you feel that tights aren’t very sexy you can always wear their alternative, hold ups or stockings. Hold ups (sometimes called stay ups or thigh highs) and stockings are much sexier than tights and often chosen by women for those special occasions. Just as ladies tights are available in a whole rainbow of color variations, different materials and deniers, you can also get stockings and hold ups for every outfit.
Fashions may change and the manufacture of materials will advance but ladies tights will remain a staple item in most women's wardrobes!
